Definition
FAINT stands for Funds, Authority, Interest, Need, and Timing. It is a sales checklist of five things to learn about a lead before you spend time on a call. The F means Funds, whether the lead can pay, and not Fit.
What is FAINT in sales?
FAINT is a checklist of five things to learn about a lead before you spend time on a call. It is not the same as BANT. BANT checks Budget, Authority, Need, and Timing. It has no letter for Interest.
| Letter | Stands for | The question behind it |
|---|---|---|
| F | Funds | Can they pay for this? |
| A | Authority | Can they say yes? |
| I | Interest | Do they want to fix this? |
| N | Need | Do they have a problem you can solve? |
| T | Timing | Do they want it soon enough? |
Is the F in FAINT Funds or Fit?
The F is Funds.
Fit is not one of the five letters. Fit is how well a lead matches what you sell overall. You learn it by checking all five letters.
Funds is also not the same as Budget. A buyer can have money for the right project without a set number written down yet. Funds asks whether the money is there.
A quick check: if a source lists Fit as the F, it is not the original FAINT.
What does FAINT look like for a service business?
Here is an example for a small design studio. It is not a real customer.
- Funds: "Do you have a rough range in mind?"
- Authority: Listen for something like "I'll run it past my partner."
- Interest: "What made you reach out now?"
- Need: "What do you need help with?"
- Timing: "When would you like to start?"
Asking who decides can feel rude. In Qualiform, a question set to Infer only is never asked directly. The AI fills it in from clues in what the visitor says, or leaves it blank. So you can learn who decides without asking.
To turn these five answers into one number, see lead scoring. To pick the exact questions your form asks, read the guide to contact form lead qualification questions.
Common questions
What is the difference between FAINT and BANT?
FAINT has five letters and BANT has four. FAINT adds Interest. It also asks about Funds, meaning whether they can pay, where BANT asks about Budget, meaning a set amount.
Should a contact form ask all five FAINT questions?
Not always out loud. Need and Timing are easy to ask. Authority and Funds can feel pushy, so it often works better to pick them up from what the person already said.
Do small businesses need a framework like FAINT?
A small business does not need the name. It needs to check the same few things on every inquiry, so two people reading one inquiry reach the same answer.
