Definition

Skip logic is a form rule that jumps a visitor past questions that do not apply to them, based on an answer they already gave. Someone who says they rent, for example, never sees questions meant for owners. It keeps the form short for each person.

How is skip logic different from branching and conditional logic?

Skip logic is not the same as conditional logic. Conditional logic is the wider name for any "if this, then that" rule on a form. Skip logic and branching are two kinds of it.

Term What it does Example
Skip logic Jumps past questions that do not apply A visitor says the job is not urgent, so "Is water coming through right now?" is skipped.
Branching Sends visitors to different sets of questions "Repair" leads to questions about the problem. "New install" leads to questions about the space.
Conditional logic Any rule that changes the form based on an answer If the job is outside the service area, show a different closing message.

These words are not used the same way everywhere. When you set up a form, read what a setting does, not only its name.

What does skip logic look like for a service business?

Here is a made-up example for a plumbing company. The form first asks "What do you need?" and offers two answers.

  1. A repair. Next it asks "What is happening?" and "Is it urgent?"
  2. A new install. Next it asks "What are you installing?" and "When would you like it done?"

A visitor who needs a repair never sees the install questions. Each person answers three questions instead of five.

How does Qualiform ask a question only of some visitors?

In Qualiform, this works like branching. Start with a Pick one question, where visitors choose one answer from a list. Then use an answer's Add question to ask a question only of visitors who pick it. Qualiform calls these paths.

Three limits apply:

  1. It goes one level deep. A question added under an answer cannot have questions of its own.
  2. Questions added under its answers are never asked unless the question is a Pick one.
  3. Questions added under the answers are not asked after an answer outside the list.

The AI is also told to work out answers from what a visitor already said before asking. Someone who writes "a pipe burst this morning" has already told it the job is urgent.

To see where questions like these fit in a form, read which questions a contact form should ask to qualify a lead.

Common questions

Do small businesses need skip logic?

Only if some questions fit some visitors and not others. If everyone answers the same three questions, a form does not need it.

Can a skipped question lower a lead's score in Qualiform?

No. A visitor who picks a different answer is never asked the questions added under the other answers, and those questions do not count for them or against them.

Does skip logic make a form shorter?

It makes the form shorter for each visitor, not shorter overall. The full list of questions stays the same, but each person only sees the ones that fit their answers.
